When kids were younger, Jeff loved going to the whaling museum in New Bedford...i think he loved it more than them...a lot to learn and hands on viewing of things..great place, day trip. Robyn

Last summer, we had planned a day trip to Block Island with our 8 year old grandson & 9 year old nephew, but a forecast of rain soon changed our mind. What to do with 2 active boys for an entire day? We decided to change our agenda and visit the newly constructed Connecticut Science Center at 250 Columbus Boulevard in Hartford, CT. Although it took us a little over 2 hours, it was well worth the ride.
There were well over 100 exhibits, most of them hands on. There is also a 3D theater with an extra cost. There are three different movies to choose from. The two boys decided on the dinosaurs. No surprise there!
Both boys as well as the four adults in our group had a ball! We raced cars & boats in the energy exhibit, checked out our diet & fitness levels in the health exhibit & created Rube Goldberg like machines in the Invention Dimension.
We ate lunch in the museum’s café which was not your typical museum fare. The café served locally grown meats & produce & was yummy. The only downside was a very small seating area, very crowded at lunchtime. There are other restaurants nearby, and your wristband allows you to leave & reenter the building during your visit. The center does allow you to bring food into the lobby area but again, there is limited seating.
There was plenty of parking in the underground garage but there was a fee. The building is fully handicapped accessible. Strollers are allowed but I would recommend bringing a smaller one as the museum is very interactive and elevators are not that large.
While there is something for just about all ages, I don’t know if I would bring a two or three year old. While there are some exhibits geared to them, they would not enjoy the majority of activities.

I second Robyn's suggestion of a day trip to New Bedford to visit the Whaling Museun. We went after Christmas with our 6-year old and his young cousins and they all loved it. All those whale bones! Like going to the Museum of Natural History in NYC, but without the dino bones. Free Whaling Museum passes from the local pubic libraries too. Patrick's Mom in Newport

I enjoy taking my children 3 and 5 to Buttonwood Zoo in New Bedford. It is small enough that I do not need a stroller and my daughter can walk the entire time. The kids love to ride the small train around the zoo and the pony rides in the summer. (Both cost extra!) We sometimes try to go on Mondays to see the Toe Jam Puppet Band. They are there every week! It only takes a little more than an hour to see the entire zoo. We usually pack a snack or lunch and eat it there!

My favorite thing to do is right in Newport. On a Sunday afternoon, we love to pack a picnic and head to Brenton Point to fly kites. There are always tons other people with kites and even some "kite clubs!" Some of them are huge and amazing. I think it is almost impossible to fail at flying a kite here. There is always wind. The kids love it! There is usually someone there selling kites and the Del's truck is often nearby for a treat.

I love to pack a picnic and ride bikes at Colt State Park! Even with yougest who is 3, I can let her ride her bike while I walk and my husband rides ahead with the other kids. We also always stop at Grey's Ice Cream in Bristol on the way home!

My kids 8 and 10 love Boston. We usually head to the Museum of Science and then for a walk along the Charles River. We have gone on the Duck Tour Boats which they both love! We always stop at Fanuel Hall for lunch and a ahort walk to Mike's Pastries in the North End for dessert! Sometimes we will look for a cheap hotel with a pool nearby and make it an overnight.
