Summer Reading 2010

Many of the local libraries have begun planning for their summer reading programs.  If you have never participated with your children, it is a great way to keep the kids minds stimulated and keep them reading throughout the summer.  Each program has goals and prizes that the children can strive to meet.  Last year included a magician, free museum passes, gulls tickets and more.  Be sure to sign up!  It is a great thing to do with the kids on a rainy day!  Research has shown that children who participate in reading programs during the summer keep up their skills and develop a positive attitude about reading.

Middletown Public Library

On July 1st, children in grades K- 5 are invited to sign up for the library’s 2010 Summer Reading Club, “Make A Splash- READ!”  Children will “fish” for questions and make a variety of projects after reading their books.  Each child’s progress will be recorded in a “Make A Splash” reading record and on the library’s bulletin board.

Newport Gulls Summer FANatic About Reading

People's Credit Union has teamed up with the Newport Gulls once again for FANatic About Reading Night.  FANatic About Reading Night is a program that encourages elementary school children to read, especially during the summer.  This is the program's third year.

People's Credit Union employees collected over 500 children's books that will be
delivered to schools on Aquidneck Island.  Newport Gulls players and People's Credit Union employees will visit all the schools throughout the month of June to read to the
children and encourage the importance of reading.

All students will be given bookmarks and will be asked to read four books before July 20, 2010.  If the students complete four books they will be asked to bring their bookmark to the Newport Gulls game on July 20 for free admission into the game.  The students who participate in the program will be recognized on the field during the pre-game ceremony.

"Stressing the value of reading at a young age is so important.  We are happy to
team up with the Gulls once again for this successful program," said Arthur Paul,
People's Credit Union Vice President.
